Authorities Team Up to Enforce City Fireworks Ordinance

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

If you're planning on bringing personal fireworks into the city limits of Corpus Christi, you should rethink that plan. Police officers and firefighters are joining forces tonight to try and catch people who are doing that.

Firefighters and police set up near the area fireworks stands, watching for people buying fireworks and heading back toward the city. Dozens of people were stopped Wednesday afternoon, most receiving warnings after handing over their stash; but that's a small price to pay, considering the fact that citations come with a fine of up to $2,000.

"In this instance, there were actually two cars," said Captain Robert Polanco of the Corpus Christi Fire Department. "The car in front of us gave themselves up and pulled over, and actually had fireworks. Also, we were able to get both vehicles at the same time."

They seized thousands of dollars worth of fireworks during Wednesday afternoon's  stakeout. They'll eventually be destroyed. In the evening, police and firefighters will be patrolling neighborhoods, looking for people violating that long-standing city ordinance.
