Confirmed Case of West Nile Carried by Local Mosquitos

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Officials have confirmed the first case of West Nile Virus in a mosquito in Nueces County this year.

The positive sample came from a mosquito trap in the 400 block of Bartlett Street, near Leopard and Old Robstown Road.

Because of the find, the city will ramp up its vector spraying in this part of town. The good news in all of this is that, so far, there have been no human cases of the virus reported.

In fact, there hasn't been a human case of West Nile in Nueces County in about five years.

"In 2011, it was a very quiet year. No mosquito cases, and no human cases," said Dr. William Burgin, Jr., a local health authority. "Our last human case in Nueces County was in 2007, and that year had six cases. The year before was a bad year, and we had 21 cases at that time, of human cases. We have had no human cases since 2007."

As for the symptoms of West Nile Virus, it starts out like the flu, but then progress into a more meningitis-type illness, with stiff neck, severe headache and mental fogginess. West Nile can be fatal, if not treated early.

According to Burgin, the best way to protect yourself is to remember the Four D's: Use insect repellents containing DEET, DRESS in long sleeves and long pants, stay indoors at DUSK and DAWN, when mosquitoes are most active, and DRAIN standing water, which can act as mosquito breeding sites.
