CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Leading a healthy lifestyle can be tough, but when you're diabetic, it is crucial that you eat the right foods.

On Tuesday, a few folks took their diabetes nutrition classes out of the classroom and into the grocery store. At the Moore Plaza HEB, they learned how to read labels and avoid processed foods, something especially important for diabetics.

They are with the Coastal Bend Health Education Center, and were referred there by a doctor or health care provider.

"Mostly trying to balance our meals and try to eat these Mexican foods," diabetic Lydia Q. Rodriguez said. "We're used to these tortillas."

"People think they know what to eat, but may not know the amount to eat," dietician Mary Beth Robinson said. "So portion size is a big thing, and reading nutrition labels and knowing what's in those things."
