It's Time Texas: Summer Playground Program keeps kids active

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - It may be a hot July day, but Tyler kids are beating the heat and their summer boredom with water sports at P.T. Cole Park.

"It's great because we get to play in the water, basketball court and park swings and the best part is the food," says Kelvin Watson.

Kelvin Watson says if it wasn't for the Summer Playground Program he'd be parked at home.

The City of Tyler's Parks and Recreation department puts on the program... They have been since the 1950's.

"I would just sit in the house and go to sleep," says Kelvin.

Ann Santana from the City of Tyler Parks and Recreation Department, with the help of her counselors, keeps the activities fresh and fun.  "It teaches the kids not only team work, but fitness and cooperation and also it is just a great way to get outside," says Ann Santana, Glass Recreation Supervisor.

It really doesn't take much to keep these kids active and engaged.  They used sponges for racing and a balloon for a balloon toss.  "We have fun at the park everyday," says Sanaya Hall.  "It's like food, playground and all of the kids that come, some come everyday, some come once a week.  It's fun."

The fun and cool races test their speed, strength, coordination and team work.  Similar free activities are going on from 9 to 1:30 each day at City, Pollard and Emmett Scott Parks.  There's a fee for Glass Recreation Center.

"A lot of children have what they call outdoor deprivation and they don't know how to play outside any more," says Santana.  "We are trying to stimulate the kids to play a lot of cooperative and fun games, where they are not only coming out and having fun in the sun, they are also making memories."

Teaching kids along the way that staying active, even on summer break, can be a good time and good for you.
