Scammers Say Obama Will Pay Your Electric Bill

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Consumers have become targets for a coast-to-coast telemarketing scam that claims to help out with energy bills.

The scammers say that, in exchange for personal identifying information such as bank routing numbers or Social Security numbers, President Obama will pay their electricity bills.

John Sims, CEO of Nueces County Electric Cooperative, urged people to guard their personal accounting and banking information.

The scam has left some consumers thinking that their bill has been paid, but did not check with their utility company to be sure. Restoration and connection fees can be as high as $250 for people whose power is cut off due to non-payment.

Those who receive this call are asked to call 1-855-632-7348.
