Beaumont jail evacuated this afternoon

Posted: Updated:

The LaSalle Correctional Facility, a privately owned jail in downtown Beaumont, was evacuated for a short time earlier this afternoon. The reason for the evacuation was a spray that was used to control an inmate.

The OC spray. or Oleoresin Capsicum. is used by police agencies and detention centers to temporarily incapacitate inmates who are violent or aggressive.

The person sprayed will experience tearing, pain and even temporary blindness.

A statement issued by the Sheriff's Office says the spray can cause mild irritation towards other inmates so the jail was evacuated.

No one required medical attention.  The Beaumont Fire Department was called to ventilate
the facility.
