Doctors: Wet weather can bring up depression

Posted: Updated:

Rain hits the sidewalk and suddenly people run indoors, to their cars or race home.

However, those who stay inside through the showers can end up feeling as dull as the weather.

"Yes, sometimes it just makes me want to sleep," said Jeanette Albright.

Albright recently lost her husband and says the rain brings up those emotions.

"You know, staying in and just thinking about troubles and things like that can cause them to go into depression," said Albright.

Psychotherapist Dr. Raegan Hollier agrees. She says the weather can affect anyone's behavior and can bring on depression. That's because as rain falls so does our mood.

"I've even noticed myself sometimes just not having the motivation to do the things that I normally do," said Dr. Hollier.

Doctors say weather depression mimics clinical depression. You feel increased irritability, sadness, difficulty concentrating, sleeping too much.
When it comes to weather related depression, it stops when the rain stops.

"Our bodies enjoy being out in the sun our minds need that, and when we're stuck in the house all day long and we're not seeing sunlight outside it affects our mood," said Dr. Hollier.

Walking around in the rain can be a pain, but there are ways to keep from getting down. Dr. Hollier suggests staying active, visit family, go to the mall or the gym. You need to eat healthy: fresh vegetables and fruits. Doctors say that can make it feel more like Summer time. Open up the curtain in your home, even when it's raining, to let some light inside.

The gym is where Joe Nguyn picked up his mood.

"I wanted to get out of the house and get a good workout in and just get motivated again," said Nguyn.

Albright escaped the house by shopping.

"You realize you have to get out and get moving.'' You just can't let it take over," said Albright.
