Off-duty Officer Catches Burglar Breaking into Neighbor's Car

Officer J. Lerma on his way home from an off-duty job checked his neighborhood after a neighbor had reported being burglarized last week.  Officer Lerma found Ernesto Silva, 45, burglarizing his neighbor's truck.

Silva fled upon seeing the Officer who followed him and reported the burglary.  Officer followed Silva to the 330 block of Briarhurst where Silva pulled over.  Upon seeing the Officer, Silva raised his hands in surrender.  Officer Lerma arrested Silva who was found to have two of his neighbor's fishing rods inside the vehicle.

The fishing rods which had the victim's name engrave on them were valued at $760 and were returned to him.  Silva was booked at the City Detention Center and charged with Burglary of a Vehicle.  The crime is Class "A" Misdemeanor and punishable by up to one year in jail and a $4,000 fine.
