77th Annual Deep Sea Roundup Kicks Off

Posted: Updated:

PORT ARANSAS (Kiii Sports) - The week long storm clouds parted this afternoon, giving way to sunny skies and perfect afternoon conditions for the 77th Deep Sea Roundup competition in Port Aransas.

Officials say the offshore weather started a little rocky Friday morning, cutting the short the annual kids' "piggy perch" competition by about 30 minutes due to lightning and choppy waters. From then on however, it was near-perfect conditions as the offshore fisherman started arriving at the weigh station around 5 pm.

John Brodrick of Fair Oaks Ranch near San Antonio reeled in the biggest catch of the shark division. His mammoth catch checked in at 144 pounds and almost six feet long. The 2012 edition of the roundup is the first for Brodrick and several others, who say it's an experience they won't soon forget.

The fishing portion of the Deep Sea Roundup will wrap up tomorrow night with the awards for each division handed out on Sunday.
