Cosart, relievers combine for first 1-hitter in Hooks' history

Posted: Updated:

CORPUS CHRISTI (CCHooks) - Austin Wates capped a 10-hit, 10-RBI four-game homestand with his fourth home run of 2012 and Jarred Cosart took a no-hitter into the sixth as Corpus Christi turned back Frisco 5-2 before 5,861.

The Hooks have won 14 of their last 17 at Whataburger Field. Corpus Christi is 15-7 in second-half Texas League play, 52-40 overall. The RoughRiders fell to 10-12 and 51-41.

Cosart grappled with occasional wildness, walking four. He teamed with Kevin Chapman and Jason Stoffel for the first one-hitter in Corpus Christi franchise history.

Frisco finally put a runner in scoring position in the fifth as Cosart free passed Jared Hoying and plunked Val Majewski.

The RoughRiders broke through with their first run and initial hit in the sixth, Leury Garcia (lead-off walk) scooting home when Jurickson Profar tripled over the head of Drew Muren in deep center field. Profar knotted the contest at 2 on a fielder's choice RBI by Engel Beltre.

Cosart worked 5 2/3, giving way to Chapman after just one safety. He struck out five and retired 11 Frisco hitters via ground outs. Chapman (6-3) was seven-up, seven down with two Ks and Stoffel earned his 15th save in 16 chances.

The Hooks benefited from shortstop Profar's 19th error while taking a 1-0 first-inning lead. Andy Simunic reached on the throwing miscue and Jon Singleton provided a two-out RBI single.

Singleton posted his 52nd run batted in with sacrifice fly No. 1 four frames later. Wates opened the home fifth with a single to right-center, was sacrificed to second by Simunic and wild pitched another 90 feet by Cody Buckel.

Buckel failed to record an out in the sixth. Jake Goebbert drew a lead-off walk and advanced to third on Chris Wallace's single to right.

Muren's sacrifice fly to center off Miguel De Los Santos pushed Goebbert home as Corpus Christi re-took the lead at 3-2. Wates' 10th hit of the four-game series in 20 at-bats - a two-out, two-run shot over the left-field berm - padded the margin to three.

Buckel (1-4) permitted five hits, three earned runs and three walks. He fanned four.

Wallace has a six-game hitting streak, Muren a seven-gamer.

The Hooks bus to Midland for four with the RockHounds Monday through Thursday. Jose Cisnero (7-6) meets Shawn Haviland (5-7) in the opener.
