Registered Dietician Busts Some Food Myths

Posted: Updated:

Sometimes it is tough separating food fact from food fiction, and so called "food myths" can cause us to make bad decisions about our diet.

For example, there is lots of confusion about carbs.

"When you look at complex carbohydrates, whole grain rice, whole grain pasta, whole grain breads, as well as beans and legumes, fruits and vegetables, they are actually attributed to helping with weight loss, and weight maintenance after you've lost weight, and disease reversal," registered dietitian Kristen Kirkpatrick said.

Another food myth, that sea salt is better for us than table salt. It's actually not. Sea salt contains the same amount of sodium as the regular stuff.

Also, if you're an egg lover, but have high cholesterol, guess what? You don't have to give them up.

"Eggs are like that perfect food," Kirkpatrick said. "They're cheap. They're high in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants. They're high in choline. They are just a wonderful, good source of protein."

And finally, a tip about artificial sweeteners. Just because they are "no calories" doesn't mean they are "no guilt," because artificial sweeteners have been tied to an increased risk of certain diseases.
