Steamy book grows in popularity

Posted: Updated:

With over 30 million copies sold worldwide it's one of those novels that if you haven't read, you kind of feel like your missing out on something because every one else has.

We're talking about the erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey.

"Seriously everyone's read them," said one reader.

"Everybody that reads it says they like it," said another.

It's the book that seems to be a hot topic of conversation.

"It's really been pushed on TV and in magazines," said a reader who's skeptical of the books.

The Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy isn't only flying off the shelves at the bookstore; one of Beaumont's biggest libraries is also getting slammed by readers.

"We've got at least 30 holds right now for these books throughout the system," said assistant library administrator Geri Roberts.

It's isn't only hard to find these books on the shelves of the Beaumont public library but there is a waiting list for the books in Port Arthur and the Orange public library is in the process of buying the books because they've had so many requests.

Some librarians call it a phenomenon. Why have these erotica books become such a sought after series?

"The story line, the love story. It's not just about, you know, that," said one reader referring to the sexual content.

"I guess because everyone talks about how good they are it makes you want to read them," said another reader as her reason for wanting to read the books.

"Too much hype," said Jenny More who's dubious about the book series.

But not everyone is sold by all the publicity the book has gotten.

"I think the younger people, the under aged people are getting influenced to read something maybe they shouldn't be reading at this point in their life," said More.

Whatever the reason, fact is these books are best sellers, prompting even those who haven't read a book in a while to pick this one up.

Since it's release in March the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy has outsold the first book in the Harry Potter series to become Britain's fastest paperback to reach one million sales.

According to U.S. Media the movie rights to the trilogy were bought by Universal and Focus Features.
