One of Orange County's most popular parks is undergoing a makeover and will be closed for a week.
Parks administrator Donna Scales had to turn families away as Claiborne West Park is now closed for renovations.
"It's has been something we've been planning for a while," said Scales.
"It was good and everything else it just needed to be repaired," said Slade Clasby takes his daughter to the park about two times a week and was hoping to host little Madison's birthday there.
But because the repairs are being made to improve the safety of the playground he's fine with having to move his party plans.
"To keep kids from getting hurt and it will be a better place for them to play," said Clasby.
About six months ago Orange County Parks and Rec. laid down carpets on these landings because after being here for 15 years the coating began to ware, exposing the metal posing a danger to the children.
"They could have cut themselves in some areas," said Clasby.
Scales says the structure itself is still sound but they need to replace the rubber tiles with poured-in-place playground surfacing to protect the kids from the cement.
"Our kids come out and we want them as safe as possible," said Scales.
With hundreds of kids visiting the park daily safety is a top priority.
Parks administrator Donna Scales says summer is the perfect time to close for construction because they get most of their traffic during the school year.
Orange County is footing the $28,000 bill for the renovations.
The unveiling of the upgraded playground is scheduled for next Friday, July 27th.
