Agencies Participate in Hurricane Training Exercise

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Several agencies responsible for cleaning up after a disaster were in Corpus Christi putting themselves to the test Wednesday.

Members from the Coast Guard, the Environmental Protection Agency, General Land Office and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality teamed up for a hurricane training exercise on Wednesday. Close to 200 people from across the state took part in the drill.

A command center was set up at Al Amin Shrine on Suntide Road. From there, teams were sent to sites all along the Port of Corpus Christi for mock oil spills and fake abandoned chemical containers. They also checked in at water and waste-water sites to find out whether they were operational or not during the mock drill.

"What we don't want to do is have these agencies go out and duplicate the same targets," said Steve Mason of the EPA. "To save the tax-payer dollars, we want to be as efficient as we can, so we want the agencies to all be working together."

The training exercise continues Thursday.
