Mushrooms on rise due to recent rains

Posted: Updated:

He says he's heard you're supposed to avoid wild mushrooms but he's a bit of a dare devil so Beau Davis of Beaumont took a walk in a big pile of them.

Rains have fallen the last 15 days in a row in Southeast Texas causing fungus that's on the ground year round to suddenly become active and pop up in the form of mushrooms.

Landscaper Brian Holst from Al Cook Nursery and Landscaping in Beaumont says rains, coolness, and cloudiness provide the perfect atmosphere for mushrooms.

The main question of every one's minds is whether or not these wild mushrooms are edible. While most are some can be extremely poisonous.

Holst says when it comes to landscaping they can be hand picked or mowed over which some Southeast Texans have spent the last several days doing but planting anything next to them may provide a great growing opportunity.
