CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii Sports) - As 3Sports was the first to report this afternoon, Moody Head Baseball Coach, Cornelius "Corky" Gallegos has decided to leave the program.
CCISD officials say they are shocked and were surprised with the news of Gallegos's decision to step aside.
Dr. Roland Hernandez, a Chief Administrative Officer with CCISD states, "he has done a great job with the baseball program at Moody High School and with the kids. We hate to see him leave and we want to thank him for the years that he has given to the school, the district and the community."
Gallegos held a team meeting with his players this morning and informed them of his decision to resign as the head baseball coach. CCISD says they have yet to receive an official letter of resignation.
Since taking over the head coach position in 2002, Gallegos has led the Trojans to two state titles, once in 2004 and another in 2007.
Gallegos ran into trouble this past season when he was arrested for suspicion of driving while intoxicated on Friday, March 30th. The Moody coach sparked controversy when he coached the Trojans in a regular season game against Alice the following day.
CCISD placed him on suspension Monday, April 2nd before reinstating him before the end of the regular season. A toxicology report released last month revealed Gallegos's blood alcohol level the night of his arrest was at .17, more than twice the legal limit.
Hernandez reiterated that the decision to step down was Gallegos's and his alone, citing "personal reasons."
