Major drug raid relieves community

Posted:

Marijuana, Xanax, Dilaudid and Hydrocodone were among the drugs seized just before 7:00 a.m. Wednesday in the 4000 block of Agnes St. in Beaumont.

Now ICE is involved. Police aren't yet releasing the names of the two men arrested but say one is a 39-year-old Beaumont man. The other is a 27-year-old Jamaica native who says he came to Beaumont on a 90 day tourist visa a year ago.

Jefferson County Sheriff's Office investigators watched the house for a week before making the raid. They had to chain metal bars covering the back door to the back of the SWAT van and jerk the bars off to get inside. Once there, they saw one of the biggest stashes of the year.

Clarence Basha was woken by the sound of the SWAT van yanking the bars off his neighbors door.

"They had the streets blocked off, and I saw policemen going in and out pulling stuff out," said Basha.

Here's what they pulled out: 15 pounds of marijuana, 770 xanax pills, 77 dilaudid, 500 synthetic marijuana packets, hydrocodone, a baby bottle with codeine, a common way users drink the medicine, and $990.

With that amount of drugs, investigators say the men must have been dealing to hundreds of people.

Chief Deputy Ron Hobbs says investigators serve three to four drug search warrants a week in Jefferson County, and this time those who live nearby were calling in because they were fearful that drugs were being sold in their neighborhood.

"Nobody likes this level of trafficking. That's hard to tolerate with good neighbors around, people afraid to leave their homes," said Chief Deputy Hobbs.

Chief Deputy Hobbs says the 39-year-old Beaumont man arrested is a veteran drug dealer, and the 27-year-old's immigration status is being reviewed since he said he is from Jamaica.

Meanwhile, Basha says he was glad to see the drugs are gone.

"What they're doing is not only hurting themselves, but they're hurting young people and a lot of old people are hurt by it because of crime committed, robbing stealing, breaking in."

The two men arrested will be face charges of possession of marijuana and possession of controlled substances, all with the intent to deliver. That carries a range of two to 20 years in prison if found guilty.
