Customers Line Up for Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

More than a hundred locals lined up outside of local Chick-Fil-A restaurants on Wednesday as part of Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day, some in support of the company's stance on gay marriage, and some simply supporting the company's right to freedom of speech.

The crowds showed at both Chick-Fil-A locations in Corpus Christi, at the restaurant on SPID and Everhart and the La Palmera food court location. At the SPID location, the lines wrapped around the building, and at one point, according to callers, it stretched towards the Bed Bath & Beyond in the shopping center behind it.

The Appreciation Day is in support of Chick-Fil-A's Christian view on same-sex marriages. Around the country, proponents of same-sex marriage have condemned their stance, and even called for full-scale boycotts of the restaurant chain.

Kiii News has been trying to contact members of the Gay-Straight Alliance at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi to get their comments on the issue, but have so far been unable to reach anyone.

Chick-Fil-A found itself in the same-sex marriage debate when the restaurant chain's president Dan Cathy announced his views on gay marriage to The Baptist Press on July 16. He explained that the company supports the "biblical definition of the family unit." Same-sex marriage proponents were infuriated by the remarks, many saying that Chick-Fil-A's position is bigoted.

According to CNN, Former G.O.P presidential candidate Mike Huckabee proclaimed Aug. 1 Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day, calling for people to show their support for the Christian restaurant chain by showing up to grab a bite to eat. The company itself announced that the Appreciation Day was not their idea.

Kiii News will have more on this at 5 and 6 p.m.
