Sometimes we need a good kick to get in gear and workout. Other times, we need to kick and punch to burn calories and shed weight, with body combat training.
For more than three years, Scott McCall and his wife Missy have been instructing a mixed martial arts inspired workout.
"Tae Kwon Do, Tai Chi, kickboxing, Capoeira, Muay Thai," body combat Instructor Scott McCall said. "It just makes them feel like they're doing something. There's an attitude to it, and you have to have that passion."
McCall said pretty much anyone can participate.
"We'll see people doing this, but once they start hearing the music, you can see them try to get into the moves," Instructor Missy McCall said.
The benefits of the fast-paced, calorie-burning, cardio workout also include reversing diabetes and improving the function of the heart and lungs. Many of the people who participate in the training said they also come away with something else: confidence.
The amped-up McCall duo said you do not have to go all out to reap the benefits of the exercise.
The class can set you on the right path to good health, but remember, it does not prepare you for actual combat. The instructors like to remind their students, "keep it in here. Don't take it to the street."
As with any new exercise, be sure to consult your physician first.
