Police Recognized for Going Above and Beyond

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Some Corpus Christi police officers received some recognition for going above and beyond the line of duty.

Senior Officer Emily Perez and Officer Brenda Garza were presented with a certificate of merit from Police Chief Floyd Simpson at the police department headquarters Wednesday. They helped to organize a back-to-school event at West Guth Park called Operation Safe Return.

The officers gathered local businesses, schools and students, and handed out free school supplies and health screenings for the youngsters. More than 750 students and their parents also learned about burglary prevention, anti-bullying and staying in shape during the event.

"We had a very successful event, and I believe it made everyone out there feel good that we were helping the community and helping the children," Perez said.

"It's very overwhelming and surprising that I got this," Garza said. "This is the first one I've gotten, so it's very overwhelming. I'm excited."

The Corpus Christi Police Department is in the process of organizing another Operation Safe Return for the students of the Corpus Christi Independent School District. Kiii News will let you know when they set a date for that event.
