CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

A mini-health fair took place Friday, courtesy of the local health department.

"We want to stress healthy behaviors, and making healthy choices," Health Education Specialist Noelia Rodriguez said. "So this is one way of raising awareness."

The Corpus Christi-Nueces County Public Health District on Horne Road held the Summer Wellness event Friday morning. The event was free and open to the public.

The program offered cholesterol screenings, dental and hearing information, and free diabetes screenings. One participant  found some not-so-great news at the health fair.

"I had high blood pressure testing, and diabetic testing, pretty good. Didn't come out great, but it's okay," said Lisa Flores, who found out she was diabetic. "I kind of heard through my doctor that I might be diabetic, but now it's like for sure that I am."

Flores said that now that she's armed with this new information, she will be attending diabetes education classes, will get her blood sugars checked every three months, and she'll start taking medications.
