CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -
A gas can was left too close to the water heater, and caused a house fire Friday afternoon.
It was about 12:30 p.m. when the fire sparked at a home on the 5700 block of Del Starr, near Holly and Weber. The two people in the home, along with their pets, were able to escape without injury.
Investigators said a gas can that was used to fill generators at the home was simply left too close to the water heater. The water heater's pilot light ignited the fumes from the gasoline.
The back patio of the home suffered the most damage. "A lot of it is siding that has to be replaced," fire victim John Huff said.
The homeowner does have insurance.
