Deputy Detains Illegal Immigrants in Highway Traffic Stop

BISHOP (Kiii News) -

A sharp-eyed constable out on Highway 77 and County Road 70 spotted a truck traveling south on the frontage road, not following the rules of the road.

"Well, I was out there underneath the overpass, and all of a sudden this U-Haul comes up to the stop sign and doesn't make a complete stop," Deputy Benigno Zapata said. "So I made a traffic stop."

That stop netted two undocumented immigrants, and a truck with fake temporary license plates.

It was pulling a small sport utility vehicle loaded with items destined for the border, and points south. The deputy constable said that if the truck driver had just stopped at the stop sign, he probably wouldn't have been pulled over. Once he did, though, it was obvious something wasn't right.

"I checked out the passengers," Zapata said. "One of them wasn't wearing a safety belt, so I gave them a safety-belt violation. They were acting kind of nervous, so I called Border Patrol. Both passengers are undocumented aliens."

The driver of the truck was from Guatemala and did have all his papers in order. He was given a ticket and sent on his way. The other two men were taken in by the U.S. Border Patrol and will be deported to their home countries.
