Grant Money for Veterans Assistance Program

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Did you know that by simply buying a special scratch-off Lotto ticket, you can help out a veteran in need of financial assistance?

It's a $2 scratch-off, and the Texas Veterans Commission sets that money aside for grants. Some of that grant money is making its way to Nueces County.

This will be the second year Nueces County gets a $150,000 grant from the Veterans Commission specifically to help vets; and on Wednesday, for veterans and their surviving spouses or children who need emergency financial help, making ends meet just got a little less complicated.

Toby Cross, Nueces County's Veterans Service Officer, said the eligibility rules were relaxed a bit on Wednesday by county commissioners allowing more low-income vets to qualify for assistance.

Commissioners accepted a grant from the Texas Veterans Commission for the program Wednesday. It was money raised through the sale of the $2 dollar lotto scratch-off tickets.

All the money goes to fund the Veterans Assistance Program.

Cross said the new criteria will allow for more vets and their families to take advantage of the program; changes that were needed to be made because many vets were being turned down.

Now, there are additional eligibility requirements such as income, but the County Vets Office encourages veterans or their eligible family members to stop by their office on the first floor of the Nueces County Courthouse, or call their office at 361-888-0820.
