Since 1998, a special day has been held each year at the Stiles Correctional Facility in Beaumont to honor the men who both served our country, and are currently incarcerated.
"I see everybody's happy to be here, this is their day," said veteran and inmate Robert Lunsford.
They sat around and chatted with their brothers in arms before the celebration started with the presentation of the color guard, followed by the ceremonial folding of the flag. Then, a somber tone filled the chapel as roses were placed on the photos of fallen southeast Texas service men and women.
Jesse Gomez, another incarcerated vet, said "We'll never forget our fallen brothers...who have died making the ultimate sacrifice and given their all for this country,"
The event was proudly sponsored by southeast Texas Chapter 292 of the Vietnam Veterans of America.
Gary Cranor, one of the participating sponsors with the VVA, had this to say: "The thing we've always tried to teach is...they were veterans first, yes they made a mistake...but all of them were at one time responsible individuals."
The veterans enjoyed a hearty lunch supplied by the VVA, but they were quick to make note that the big meal is not the reason for the celebration.
"Even though we're presently incarcerated...we're brought together by a special bond of a love for one another, that we're Americans," said Gomez.
