Fire officials say an Orange family was at church when a fire damaged its home and killed the family pet.
Just after 9 p.m. firefighters were called to the 1300 block of Bay Street. When they got to the house they found heavy smoke coming from a front window of the house and no one was home.
The fire was quickly put out.
When firefighters searched the inside of the home they found smoke had killed the family cat.
Around 9:30 p.m. the family arrived at the house.
The fire marshal was called to investigate the cause of the fire. The exact cause is still under investigation, but a fire department spokesperson says it has been determined that it was unintentional.
The man and woman who lived at the house made arrangements to stay with friends.
