Hooks Score Team-Record 20 Runs in Win Over Cardinals

Posted: Updated:

CORPUS CHRISTI (CC Hooks) - Corpus Christi scored a franchise-record 12 runs in the sixth while cruising to a 20-9 triumph over Springfield Sunday at Whataburger Field before 6,322.

The Hooks are 31-18 in the second half of Texas League play, 68-51 overall. Springfield dropped to 31-17 and 66-52.

Corpus Christi shortstop Ben Orloff tied a team record with five hits and has hits in his last six plate appearances. Jon Singleton began and ended the assault with home runs and finished with four RBIs. Left fielder Austin Wates, just off the DL, had three hits off the bench, as did center fielder Robbie Grossman.

The 20 runs by the Hooks is a franchise standard as well. The old mark: 19 vs. Midland on April 24, 2008.

Singleton and Drew Locke cracked back-to-back two-out home runs off Scott McGregor for a 2-0 Hooks lead after one. Singleton deposited a 2-1 offering over the right-field power alley, his 16th; Locke's bomb was his seventh.

Two McGregor throwing errors proved costly to Springfield in the second. Though Corpus Christi left the bases loaded, pitcher Matt Heidenreich's safety squeeze plated Orloff, who'd singled with one away. Orloff was safe at second and advanced to third when McGregor threw a comebacker into center field.

Singles from Locke, Jacob Goebbert and Orloff produced Corpus Christi's fourth run during the third.

Xavier Scruggs' two-run double and a throwing miscue by first baseman Singleton keyed a three-run Cardinals fourth. Jermaine Curtis and Jamie Romak contributed singles and Greg Garcia's bounce out scored Romak.

Springfield cobbled together another three-run uprising in the sixth on three hits and another Hooks error to move ahead 6-4. Garcia drove an RBI triple into the right-field corner and later crossed when third baseman Andy Simunic misplayed Audry Perez' grounder. Oscar Taveras also scored on a fielder's choice after a one-out double.

Heidenreich, pulled for Alex Sogard (3-1) in the surge's midst, logged 5 1/3 innings, five runs (three earned) five hits and three strikeouts.

It took four Cardinals pitchers to navigate the 42-minute Hooks sixth: McGregor, Deryk Hooker (1-3), Justin Wright and Chase Reid. Corpus Christi sent 16 men to the plate as

Springfield pitching walked five, including four straight. Hooker's wild pitch allowed two runs to score. Orloff extended his perfect night to four-for-four, doubling with one out and dropping a three-run triple into the right-field corner with two gone. Kike Hernandez and Wates enjoyed two hits in the frame, both singling and doubling. Grossman (walk/double) and Simunic (walk/single) reached twice.

Corpus Christi's Paul Clemens (1-1) starts the series finale against Richard Castillo (6-4) Monday at 7:05. Patrons enjoy $1 Hot Dogs and Soda from Mrs Baird's.
