Border Patrol Seeing Larger, More Frequent Drug Seizures

Posted: Updated:

AREA 3 (Kiii News) - Border Patrol agents said drug dealers are coming up with some pretty interesting ways to smuggle drugs into our country.

In fact, agents are seeing larger and more frequent dope seizures.

"They're trying to get it through our checkpoints," said Enrique Mendiola, Jr., of U.S. Customs and Border Protection. "Fortunately, we have the technology, we've got, you know, we've got well trained dog handlers. We've got some of the best trained K-9s in law enforcement that can detect these things."

Agents said they are seeing all kinds of concealments, from 18-wheelers to bunkers in ranch land along the Rio Grande. In the last four days alone, Border Patrol agents have seized more than $12.6 million worth of narcotics.
