Truck Thief Attempts to Flee From Police on Bicycle

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

A man attempted to flee from police on a bicycle Wednesday night after police received a call about a stolen truck.

The owner of Lithia Dodge on Staples called the police, saying that a 2006 Dodge Ram had been stolen from his lot. Police ended up tracking down the truck, and the man they believe stole it, 31-year old George Ortiz.

Ortiz took off in the stolen truck, but officers were able to get him to stop a short while later. He then attempted to flee on a bike that he had in the truck's bed.

"We had to tackle him off the bicycle," said Lt. Chris White of the Corpus Christi Police Department. "He didn't want to stop. Once we got him off the bicycle, he resisted a little bit, but we were able to take him into custody."

Police believe Ortiz is part of a group that has stolen five trucks from local dealerships since June. He has been charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle as well as evading and resisting arrest.
