Nineteenth-Century Home Moved in Rockport

Posted: Updated:
ROCKPORT (Kiii News) -

A historic 19th century home was moved nine blocks in Rockport on Friday, and it was quite a sight.

It's an old and very heavy house, so moving it was not an easy thing to do. It's a job that requires a lot of coordination, and very good communication.

According to the movers, one of the biggest hazards in a move like this, believe it or not, is not the power lines, but actually visibility and traffic, making sure everyone sees what's going on so that there are no accidents. Although it is kind of hard to miss the big house on the move.

The historic Bruhl-Paul Johnson house was moved by Ram House Movers, from Concho Street to Cedar Street. The move started around 8:45 a.m. Friday, and wrapped up just after lunch time. The home is set to become a history center for Aransas County.

"A house like this is about 100 tons," said John Wilkinson with Ram House Movers. "It's very, very solid, old wood. The architecture is from before things were machine-made. Everything is all hand-done, and it's a very heavy home."

Those involved with the project said they are really excited about the move, and are really interested in preserving the history of Aransas County.
