A number of cities around the country have implemented a fee for the use of plastic bags when shopping to cut down on trash and help the environment.
That was just one of the ideas on the table Friday as local retailers, City staffers and environmentalists met to finalize a plastic bag initiative to present to the City Council. Mayor Joe Adame said educating the public is key.
"Charging someone a fee has an effect, but is it a lasting effect?" Adame said. "And it doesn't have any effect on plastic bottles and other trash that ends up on our roadway and in our city. So my personal feeling is that we do an education process to help us on this journey we're on, to change the culture of our citizens' behavior."
Ultimately, the group could not come up with a final recommendation. So it is back to the drawing board. In the meantime, if you want to know how you can safely and properly dispose of your old plastic bags, visit www.abagslife.com.
