CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

A house fire on the 400 block of Dixon St. this weekend left a family of 13 with out a home, and on Monday, some little leaguers reached out to help them.

The Garcia family lost everything in the fire, which was sparked by an overheating electrical outlet. The American Red Cross stepping in to help them with some things, but they are still in much need of some basic necessities.

The Mud Cats Little League team saw their story on Kiii 3News, and wanted to help. They had collected school supplies during a weekend tournament, and decided they wanted to donate the school supplies to help the Garcia family's five kids.

"It feels awesome! It makes us feel like good people, like we should be," said Ben Rodriguez of the Mud Cats Little League team. "Seeing these kids happy having all these school supplies, just brings happiness to our heart."

"It makes me feel like a good person," Mud Cat Victor Moreno said. "It makes me feel like, 'Yay!"

The fire happened Saturday morning. Eight adults and five kids were sleeping when the flames broke out, starting in the laundry room in the back of the house. The family delivers phone books, and their back room was filled with them. This only added more fuel to the fire.

The owner of the house said his family has been going through some tough times. Just one week ago they had a death in the family, and now they are dealing with the loss of their home.

The family is extremely grateful for the supplies that were delivered Monday.

"It helps a lot. It kept us from having to struggle to find some way to get the kids what they needed," Shawn Garcia said. "Now they have it, because someone was going out of their way to get it. Feels real good."

The homeowner did have insurance, but the family did not have renters' insurance.

If you would like to make a donation, you can contact Garcia at 361-877-0699. They have set up an account at First Convenience Bank, account number #434979746.

This has been the first donation they have received, and they are happy to know that someone is trying to help them get back on their feet.
