Hooks Reach Franchise Record 77th Win

Posted: Updated:

CORPUS CHRISTI (CC Hooks) - Asher Wojciechowski pitched six shutout innings as Corpus Christi cuffed San Antonio 2-1 Sunday night at Whataburger Field before 6,358.

Wojciechowski (2-2) permitted just two hits, both in the first inning. Ali Solis and Edinson Rincon had consecutive one-out singles before the big right-hander settled in. Wojciechowski went on to retire 17 of the next 19; Solis waited out both walks.

Wojciechowski struck out four and threw 81 pitches (52 strikes). The 6-foot-4, 235-pound product of The Citadel has yielded three or fewer earned runs in each of his last 14 starts.

Arcenio Leon picked up save No. 2, fanning Jake Blackwood and Jeudy Valdez to close. Cody Decker (single/wild pitch) was stranded at second.

The Hooks got all they needed in the third. Robbie Grossman slapped a double to right-center and moved up 90 feet when Matt Jackson uncorked a wild pitch. Andy Simunic followed with a deep-drive sacrifice fly to the same area for a 1-0 lead. It soon became a crooked number as Austin Wates singled, stole second, advanced to third on Drew Locke's single and home as a result of Chris Wallace's safety.

Jackson (2-1), who left in favor of Alexis Lara after five, allowed six hits and struck out four. Fifty-eight of his 86 pitches were strikes.

Cody Decker went deep off Josh Zeid in the seventh for San Antonio's marker.

Wallace has a six-game hitting streak.

The Hooks have won nine of 11 while reaching 77 wins, best in team history. At 22 games over .500, they've matched the franchise record established by the 2006 Texas League champions.

A pair of veteran right-handers meets Monday at 7:05 in Corpus Christi's regular-season home finale. The Hooks send Ross Seaton (7-8) against Josh Geer (5-5).

All fans receive a Hooks 2013 Schedule Magnet from CPL Retail Energy and enjoy postgame fireworks.
