CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

As Hurricane Isaac continues to strengthen, waves are picking up at Corpus Christi beaches, and surfers have taken notice. In fact, strong currents took one man's life on Tuesday.

At around 10:30 a.m. at Packery Channel, first responders said a 50-year old surfer was out in the water when he underestimated the power of the waves, and he nearly drowned.

Nearby surfers were able to pull him to safety and quickly started CPR on the man. They called 911, and paramedics were on the scene just minutes later. However, the surfer died in the hospital later.

"There is a very strong current out their right now," said Timothy Netek of the Corpus Christi Fire Department. "As you can tell, even the surfers are taking it very cautiously. Anybody without a lot of experience in this water should avoid it at this time."
