It may well be the world's largest blue crab, and it is right here in the Coastal Bend, in the city of Rockport. The crab recently went through quite a makeover, but it's now on display.
It's a piece of art; a creation, not a live creature, and it is absolutely amazing. It is truly a sight to see, and the man who built it said the Guinness Book of World Records has plans to come out and measure it to make sure it is the biggest blue crab in the world.
The Big Blue Crab is made up of only aluminum and fiberglass. The 27x25-foot crab weighs 1,000 pounds.
Artist David Allgood started working on the crab last December. He said it cost more than $12,000 in materials to build the crab, and it took six days to mount the crab up on the pillars at the Rockport Beach Park; but now it is up, and attracting lots of onlookers.
"How did I do it? Lots of work," Allgood said. "Lots and lots of work. That's how I did it. Just, I don't know, drawings, imagine; imagination man. It goes everywhere."
"It's something Rockport can be proud of," Rockport resident Bob Raby said. "Whoever sees it, they won't forget about it. That's for sure."
There used to be another Big Blue Crab in Rockport for 30 years, but it was taken down in 1976 due to deterioration. So a group of community members formed the "Bring Back the Big Blue Crab Committee," which raised money to pay Allgood to bring back the crab.
The new one is bigger than the original. You can click here to read more about the history of the Big Blue Crab.
