The Animal Rehabilitation Keep, or ARK, in Port Aransas, has saved the lives of hundreds of animals over the years. On Wednesday, they got to save another one.
A caring fisherman took a brown pelican to the facility. He found it at Roberts Point Park in Port Aransas, and noticed it had a fishing hook stuck beneath its left wing.
"I'm catching bait. He tries to come get some of my bait, and I see that," fisherman Marion Sweatt said. "I throw a piece out, catch him in the net, called Tony and brought him to get fixed up."
Amanda Terry works at the ARK rehab center and said she and the ARK's director, Tony Amos, will get to work on the bird.
"We'll have to get him out and look at the hook," Terry said. "He's got a hook on the side of his body wall, and we'll probably be able to just take it out without sedation."
There are some baby black-bellied whistling ducks at the ARK. They have been there for weeks. Eventually, they will be released back out into the wild. The same goes for three baby squirrels who are being cared for, receiving a steady supply of mil.
The ARK takes in just about any wild animal in need of care. There are some baby black-bellied whistling ducks at the ARK. They have been there for weeks. Eventually, they will be released back out into the wild.

You might want to keep their number handy, just in case you come across an injured animal. The ARK's number is 361-749-6793.
