CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -
The Valero Volunteer Council presented a $30,000 check to the Food Bank of Corpus Christi on Thursday.
The money was collected through the refinery's fourth annual Reel It In for Kids fishing tournament. All the money raised helps fund the Food Bank's Kids Café Backpack Program, a program which provides students, who would otherwise go hungry over the weekend, with nutritious food to take home every Friday night.
"In these economic times, even families that are hard working are struggling," said Kandee Richardson, principal of Gibson Elementary. "It is a struggle to feed children, pay all the bills; this will help them so when they come to school, they won't be thinking about their hungry tummy, and they are ready to learn."
Right now, the Food Bank supports about 1,000 students with the Kids Café Backpack Program. The money donated on Thursday will support another 200 needy kids from the Corpus Christi Independent School District's Gibson Elementary.
