Rey Barrera
A correctional officer in the Stiles Unit in Jefferson County was escorting an inmate back to his cell, when the inmate stabbed the officer in the eye with an unknown object.
The officer, David Logan, was still able to restrain the inmate and place him in the cell.
The officer was taken to a local hospital then transferred to Memorial Hermann Baptist in Houston. Logan is in serious but stable condition.
The office of Inspector General for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice is investigating.
The inmate, 42-year-old Rey Barrera, already serving a 115 year sentence, was taken off the site.
Barrera was convicted in a 1998 aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, robbery and attempted murder.
Barrera racked up additional charges for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a deadly weapon within a penal institution, assault on a public servant while serving in a Brazoria County prison.
