Police seek robber who hit victim with a hammer

Port Arthur police are searching for a robber who they say hit a victim in the head with a hammer.

At 9:18 a.m. officers received a report of an aggravated robbery at 4336 6th Street.  A 911 caller said three people were sleeping when a robber came into the house and demanded money and drugs. 

Witnesses say the robber was armed with a handgun and a hammer.  He held a gun to the head of one of the victims and demanded money and drugs.  He hit one of the victims with the hammer before running away.

Police say they spotted the robber, but he was able to get away.  They began setting up a perimeter around 9:30 a.m. but were unable to find the robber after about an hour of searching the area.

The robber is described as a black male in his late 20's.  He is about 6 feet tall and weighs around 175 pounds.  He was last seen wearing a black shirt and red shorts.

Police say the person who was hit with the hammer had non life-threatening injuries.
