Local diabetes educators are teaming up with the hearing impaired to offer free education about diabetes.
Thursday's lesson was held at the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Center, located at 5151 McArdle Road. On the agenda were tips on how to manage diabetes, reduce medical costs and curb side effects of the disease.
"A lot of education and resources may not be accessible to the deaf and hard of hearing as easily as someone without needing any type of accommodations," said Jaime Lugo, education and training coordinator. "With us being involved, and us being education in our community, this helps us spread the education within our community."
The program is funded through a grant, courtesy of the Coastal Bend Community Foundation.
Anyone with a hearing disability is welcome to attend the class free of charge. All you need to do is call the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Center at 361-993-1154.
