CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Local first responders in Corpus Christi who have gone above and beyond duty were also recognized, this time by the organization ASIS International.

Awards were given to three first responders; Patrol Sergeant Conrad Guzman with the Nueces County Sheriff's Office, Senior Officer Jose Vela with the Corpus Christi Police Department, and Firefighter John Keller of the Corpus Christi Fire Department.

Keller responded to call about a man who was having trouble swimming in the bay. He ended up jumping into the water and saving him.

"There's a lot of great people in our department, and they could have chosen anyone," Keller said. "Anyone I work with does amazing things everyday. I feel honored."

"Our industry is just that," said Rich Chylinski of ASIS International. "We are all first responders. "It's our way of giving back, to serve us and our community, to keep us safe and secure."

The local chapter of ASIS International has also dedicated the month of September as First Responders Appreciation Month.
