One Dead, Two Injured in Live Oak County Collision

LIVE OAK COUNTY (Kiii News) -

A horrible highway accident in Live Oak County left one person dead and two others injured Thursday.

The accident happened around 12:40 p.m. on I-37, just north of Three Rivers, near a roadside rest stop. The rest area attendant said he didn't see it, but he called 911 after hearing the accident.

The Department of Public Safety said the young woman driving a grey Toyota sedan was headed southbound when, for some reason, she crossed the grassy median and went into the northbound lane.

That's when a black Buick sport utility vehicle took evasive action, trying to avoid the Toyota, but was unsuccessful. The two vehicles collided.

The young female driver of the Toyota was pronounced dead on the scene. She was 25-years old.

After being told she was dead, her fiance became extremely upset and began punching and kicking his truck in anger, and had to be restrained. He had been driving behind his soon-to-be wife when the accident happened.

The elderly couple in the SUV were taken by helicopter to University Hospital in San Antonio. The extent of their injuries are unknown. The man in the SUV is 85 years old, and his wife is 79.

"Drivers have to focus on their ability to be driving," DPS Trooper Charlie Ramirez said. "Not only that, but if you know that your body tells you when you're tired, and this might be a fatigue factor, we don't know until we look into it a little bit more; but once that fatigue factor sets in, and at the speed at this particular roadway, 75 miles an hour, you can be in a problem really fast."

It should be noted that it is unclear what caused the woman to drive into the bar ditch and into the northbound lane, as the accident still remains under investigation.

We do know the identities of the three people involved in the accident, but DPS said the next of kin has not been notified, so we are withholding that information until then.
