PORTLAND (Kiii News) -
It was all about birdies on Thursday; not the ones that fly, but the ones that golfers dream about.
The Northshore Country Club in Portland played host to an inaugural fundraiser for the Special Olympics.
"All the proceeds we are raising here today are staying local," said Alice Fulton Garza, area director of the Special Olympics Texas. "This is all going to benefit 1,400 athletes that we have registered in Area 2, or the South Texas area."
The Firefighters Association helped put on the event, called Birdies on the Bay. Golfers paid a $100 registration fee to take part in Thursday's event.
The proceeds will go to help put on the annual Special Olympics here locally. Organizers said that, if this year's event is a success, you can expect another golf tournament next year.
