UPDATE: 10 P.M. Monday: One firefighter has died and another injured firefighter is expected to make a full recovery after both received injuries Sunday afternoon during training at the 17th Annual East Texas Area Fall "Smoke Diver" School in Beaumont.
Both firefighters were treated immediately by paramedics who were on standby for the course. The two were then taken to the hospital.
According to Dennis Gifford with the East Texas Firemen's & Fire Marshal's Association, one of the firefighters, identified as Neal Smith, 46, of Atascocita, died Monday.
The other firefighter, identified as Otis Alford, 34, of Georgia, has been moved from ICU into a private room.
Gifford says Smith has been a firefighter for 5 years and has a wife and two small children.
Gifford said symptoms of heat illness can sneak up on a person quickly.
"We as firefighters have to become more aware and put our pride away and be willing to understand we are human. We just need to become more in touch with our physical capabilities," said Gifford.
