Wednesday was Dr. Hector P. Garcia Day here in Texas. The civil rights activist was influential in many areas, including empowering Hispanics to use their political voices and vote.
To mark the special day, the Dr. Hector P. Garcia American GI Forum of Texas announced the creation of the Viva Dr. Hector P. Garcia Get Out the Vote Project. The focus of the project will be on educating the Hispanic community on the issues that are relevant to healthcare, education and employment.
"What it's meant to do is engage in Dr. Hector's logo, saying education is our freedom and freedom should be everybody's business," said Peter Vellecillo, of the GI Forum. "So therefore, in engaging in the education process to educate disenfranchised minority communities about the issues around them makes them empowered enough to go the polls and vote."
On Wednesday afternoon at the gravesite of the late doctor, a wreath ceremony was held to honor Hector P. Garcia Day all across the state.
