West Indian Manatee Sighted on Shoreline Drive

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

The Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network said they were out in Corpus Christi Bay on Thursday and spotted a West Indian Manatee.

Experts say manatee sightings are rare in Texas. Since 1980, only about 10 have been rescued by the TMMSN.

West Indian Manatees in the U.S. are protected under federal law by the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972, and the Endangered Species Act of 1973, which make it illegal to harass, hunt, capture, or kill any marine mammal.

Kiii News Reporter Mike DaSilva went Live from the bay with more on the sighting.
