It has been a little over a year since a deadly traffic accident on South Padre Island Drive at Airline, which claimed the life of a 70-year old woman and severely injured another person.
The woman accused of causing the horrific accident and then fleeing the scene is now on trial on those charges.
Devry Resendez, 24, was behind the wheel of a car when she struck another vehicle on SPID on Sept. 4, 2011. In that car was the victim, 70-year old Carmen Cantu, who died.
Cantu's 25-year old niece was behind the wheel, and got out of the car and attempted to get her aunt out of the vehicle when a third vehicle slammed into their car. Cantu was propelled through the back window and onto the pavement.
Resendez then fled the scene in her car, but only made it as far as Airline because it was badly damaged.
First responders from that accident took the stand in the 214th District Court during Tuesday's first day of testimony. Resendez is on trial for intoxication manslaughter, a second-degree felony; intoxication assault involving a vehicle, a third-degree felony; and two counts of accident involving serious bodily injury or death with a deadly weapon, both third-degree felonies.
If found guilty of intoxication manslaughter, Resendez could get up to 20 years in prison, and up to ten years for the remaining charges.
