Man leads deputies on high-speed before deadly shootout

Posted: Updated:

"We used to hunt together, fish together," said Michael Mann Wednesday morning, remembering his brother-in-law, Dennis Murray, Jr.

Murray, a registered sex offender, was shot and killed by Tyler County sheriff's deputies after police say he shot at them Tuesday night.

Mann is in shock over the whole thing, saying, "This was something that bewilders me, it wasn't him."

Everything started when a deputy showed up at Mann's house in Warren, responding to a sexual assault call made by Murray's common-law wife, Brandy.

"He (the deputy) had just initiated contact, hadn't asked but a couple questions  before the suspect (Murray) drove up and she said there he is right there, and he's got weapons," Tyler County Sheriff David Hennigan told 12 News H-D Wednesday afternoon.

The sheriff says Murray then fled in his truck, leading officers North on a high-speed chase through Woodville, where he eventually stopped at his home off South Pecan Street.

Then, things got ugly.

Tire marks on the ground lead to the front yard of Murray's house, where officers told him to get out of his car and show his hands. They say he showed them a shotgun, and deputies opened fire.

Believing Murray to be unconscious, a Woodville police officer approached him to take his gun, that's when they say Murray awoke...and shot at the officer.

Luckily the shot missed, and the officer grabbed the gun. Police say Murray then pulled out a rifle, when a deputy stepped in and shot him twice. Murray was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. Mann heard the news this morning.

"He's my brother, he's been with my sister for 7 years, he's part of my family," said Mann.

Murray's first sex offense was in 1994, when he was charged with the assault of a 12 year old girl. The Sheriff says he has been in and out of jail ever since.

No officers were hurt in the shooting. The Texas Ranger are now leading the investigation.
