Port Arthur police arrest Brandon Tran, 18, in the murder of Hieu Huynh
Police arrest Darren Oliver Jr, 18, in the murder of Hieu Huynh
Two men are indicted for capital murder in connection with the September 1 shooting death of a Port Arthur businessman.
The Jefferson County Grand Jury handed up indictments against Darren Oliver Jr, 18, and Brandon Dinh Tran, 18, of Port Arthur, charging them with the murder of Nikki's Lounge owner Hieu Huynh, 62.
Police say Oliver and Tran approached Huynh and his wife as he was closing the lounge. Officers say either Oliver or Tran pulled out a gun and Huynh and his wife tried to run away.
Police say Huynh was shot in the lower ribcage as he was running. Huynh collapsed after being shot. This is when officers say one of the men walked up and shot him again, this time in the back of the head.
Investigators say Oliver and Tran then robbed Mr. Huynh of cash and jewelry.
Huynh's wife was not injured in the robbery.
Oliver was arrested the day of the shooting. Police say Tran fled the scene, sparking a manhunt.
Tran was later arrested when officers found him hiding in a room at the Driftwood Inn on Memorial Boulevard on September 13.
Jefferson County Assistant District Attorney Ramon Rodriguez tells 12News HD the case has been assigned to the 252nd District Court.
Both defendants have an initial setting before the Judge set for October 22.
Mr. Tran has hired an attorney from Houston. Mr. Oliver has hired local attorney Doug Barlow.
