Luther Jones Elementary Students Rewarded with Pig Race

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

A local elementary school principal challenged her students to raise money by selling cookie dough, and they met that challenge.

In return, the Luther Jones Elementary principal agreed to color her hair and host a race to the finish line.

Mechanical pig races have now turned into a tradition for students at Luther Jones. Principal Galen Hoffstadt has also kissed pigs and gone wild with her hair color, all as an incentive for her scholars to sell cookie dough to buy some much needed tools for teaching.

The goal was an average of eight boxes per student this year, but the students ended up selling an average of nine.

"First, the federal dollars have been cut so much, and most of our schools don't have any extra money to do things like improve the technology in the schools and update the way we present our lessons to scholars through technology," Hoffstadt said.

And as far as their pig race reward, each class was given a pig to race. The top two winning classes got trophies.
